ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTS
To be admitted to an English-speaking university, it is most often necessary to produce the results obtained in an English language test.
The three most used tests are: TOEIC, TOEFL (American test) and IELTS (British test).
These are not diplomas, but tests where you get a certain score. A given score may be considered sufficient by one university and insufficient by another.
Pay attention to the deadlines for registration, correction and delivery of results. You will need these at the time of your selection.
THE TOEIC
The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) tests are standardized certifications to assess the level of English of non-English speakers both in writing and speaking. These tests, created and administered by the ETS organization, aim in particular to assess the candidate’s linguistic knowledge in a professional context, without ever entering into specific technical jargon.
Each certification is valid for two years. Beyond this period, an individual’s language level can change significantly, so it is advisable to reassess their skills.
THE TOEFL (TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE) is the test used by American universities to assess the English language level of foreign students. It is known worldwide and accepted by many English-speaking universities, including outside the United States.
You can consult the registration procedures and test dates on the ETS website. The cost of registration is $155.
Attention! The TOEFL passed as part of the English courses of a school or a component, called “Institutional TOEFL”, are simple “trial runs” which have no legal value with American universities.
The “real” TOEFL results are never sent by the student themselves. They must ask the organization that manages the TOEFL to send their results to the universities of their choice. This shipment is free if requested when taking the test. It is chargeable if requested later.
For students applying for the ISEP program, you will indicate the ISEP code. You will know it by referring to the “How to apply” section on the ISEP website.
IELTS
This UK test is often preferred by universities in the UK and Australia, which find it more comprehensive. The cost is 170€ (this price may vary, it is given as an indication).
Registration must be made at least 3 weeks in advance: consult the IELTS website. Download the registration form (or ask the British Council to send it to you) and complete/return the form with 2 passport photos and a cheque, and a number where you can be reached.
Attention! Before any departure abroad, you must find out about the terms of your health insurance.
